Getting
Hootus onto a server takes about five minutes. Invite the bot, walk the wizard, done. Everything you pick is editable later, so don't overthink it.
1. Invite the bot
Add HootusPlootus from the invite link. Discord shows the permissions it needs and asks you to pick a server. Keep every permission ticked. The two that matter most are Manage Roles and Manage Channels: they let Hootus build your roles and channels and hand them out as members verify.
In Server Settings → Roles, drag the HootusPlootus role above your Officer and Raid lead roles. Discord only lets a bot manage roles that sit below its own, so if it's left at the bottom Hootus can't hand out roles and looks broken when it's really just the ordering.
2. Open the setup wizard
The moment Hootus lands, he DMs the person who installed him (or your guild leadership) a setup link. Open it within 24 hours and it drops you into the wizard.
Missed the DM, or it went to the wrong person? Run /setup in the server for a fresh link. It needs the Manage Server permission, so a guild master or admin runs it. The link expires after 24 hours. Grab a new one any time.
3. Walk the wizard
The wizard auto-saves as you go, so you can close it and pick up where you left off. The steps:
- Welcome. Tell Hootus whether the server is brand new (he builds roles, channels, and permissions for you) or already going (he works alongside what's there and only adds what's missing).
- Flavour. Pick the WoW Classic version your guild plays, Classic Era, TBC, or MoP. This sets the classes, specs, and raids Hootus knows about.
- Basics. Confirm your in-game guild with a character lookup against Blizzard, so verification pulls the real roster.
- Goals. Switch on the features you want: raiding, LFG, recruitment, verification.
- Focus. Tell Hootus whether you're raiding, social, or a bit of both. This sets what your dashboard leads with.
- Roles. Point each status role (member, raider, guest, PUG) at a Discord role. Hootus auto-matches what he can, or makes leadership roles for you.
- Ranks. Map each in-game guild rank to a Discord role.
- Channels. Tell Hootus where welcomes, raids, and officer notes go.
- Review. Look it over and hit finish.
New servers skip the Ranks and Channels steps, since Hootus builds that layout for you. On a server that's already running he builds it inside his own categories and stops there. A channel you already have is never renamed, moved or deleted, and its permissions are left alone apart from granting Hootus himself access so he can post there. Nothing outside those categories is reordered or removed. If a name he wants is already taken elsewhere he leaves yours alone, makes his own, and says so. When he's finished he lists every channel he created and every one he reused, under the name it actually has.
4. Watch the permission checks
The wizard checks the bot's permissions as you go and flags anything missing or a role sitting too low. If you see a warning, re-invite the bot with the link it gives you, fix the role position in Server Settings, and hit Re-check permissions. Green across the board means Hootus can do his job.
5. Verify it worked
Run /help in the server for a link to your web dashboard. If it opens and shows your guild, setup took. Run /hootus check with no user for what Hootus makes of the server: setup state, roster freshness, permissions, role position and any channel it has nowhere to post to.
Then tell your members to run /verify (or tap the welcome button) to claim their character and earn their roles. See Getting verified for what they'll do. Roster sync and GRM import fill in character data, but Discord roles are only handed out when a member runs /verify. On a server that was already running, tell everyone to verify even if they already show up in the roster, or they will not get their roles.
Set your server time in Settings → Time before you post any raid. Raid times are entered and read in server time, so getting the clock right first saves confusion later. Then post your first raid from the Planner or with /raid create. See Running a raid.
What to configure next
The wizard covers the essentials. To tune the rest, walk the admin guides in this order:
- Roles, permissions, and features
- Channels and notifications
- Verification and member messages
- Raid automation and groups
- Recruitment and applications
- Roster, members, and promotions
- Server basics
One catch: some features stay inert until their channel exists, so wire channels before you turn on channel-dependent switches. The roles guide flags which ones.
Heads-up on saving: some Settings pages save instantly, others need a Save button and warn you before you leave with unsaved changes. Watch each page to see which it is.
Where to configure this
Everything from the wizard lives behind the Settings pages on the web dashboard: roles and access, channels and routing, feature toggles, and roster and realm. Change your mind, add a feature, or re-map a role whenever. Nothing you picked is permanent.
